Admission Requirements for Truck Driving School

Attending a truck driving school is a great first step on the path to a career in the professional trucking industry. Before you can enroll in one, you’ll need a certain degree of education and licensure as well as a working understanding of the English language. Read on for more on common admission requirements.

High School Equivalent Education

Attending truck driving school can be a great choice for your future and your career, but you will first need to have obtained a certain level of education. Ideally, those who apply to enroll in truck driving school will have a high school diploma, a GED, or other equivalent degree, although you may be able to enroll after passing a specific test. Your truck driving school may need a transcript, graduation date, or other documentation.

Age and Licensure

In addition to education requirements, there are also age restrictions when it comes to enrolling in a truck driving school. If you plan on driving commercially within the state, you must be at least 18 years old. For interstate licensing, you’ll need to be 21 years old or older when you complete your program. Keep in mind you will also need a standard driver’s license before you can acquire a commercial driver’s license.

English Language Proficiency

Although you might spend a great deal of your time on the road by yourself, you’ll still need to be able to converse with the dispatchers and store owners that you work with. This means that you will need to be able to have a conversational understanding of the English language. This is also important for recordkeeping and inquiries.
